on the one who meanders

2026

As part of the exhibition *The Pulse of the Oder*. Cecylia Malik and Tom Kretschmer / the final, sixth exhibition in the series “What Do We Take With Us?” curated by Marta Smolińska.

“on the one who meanders” is a dance performance created specifically for the exhibition “The Pulse of the Oder.” The work takes as its starting point the physical movements of meandering, drifting, turning, curving, wandering, and zigzagging, as well as somatic work with the circulatory system. The dramaturgy of the performance mirrors the course of the Oder from its source in the Eastern Sudetes to its mouth at the Szczecin Lagoon, taking into account all the unique landscapes through which the river flows. The dance begins in areas untouched by humans, intensifies with the tributaries of mountain rivers and streams, the borders between the Czech Republic and Poland, encompasses the Olza, flows through the Racibórz Basin, connects with the artificial Gliwice Canal, follows the glacial valley from the Ice Age, spreads out into the Oder floodplain, fed by streams… basins, valleys, tributaries, borders, national parks, all the way to the mouth of the Oder and beyond, where its waters flow into the Baltic Sea. The river’s movement through space becomes the score for a dance and an attempt to understand the essence of the Oder through embodiment.

In her work, Anna Nowicka explores the choreography of the imaginary and the relationship between dreaming and dancing bodies. She develops a new poetic narrative style that skillfully shifts between inner states, characters, flickering gestures, formal dances, and atmospheric landscapes. As in a dream, all these forms of being emerge from an embodied experience and dissolve into the space of possibilities.
