Experiments in the field of dance during the second half of the 20th century led to a significant broadening of the understanding of the concept of choreography. As a collection of diverse practices developed over decades at the intersection of the arts, the term no longer needs to refer exclusively to the composition of bodily movement or the notation of dance steps. Choreographic tools serve to create relationships between various elements within structures that organize time and space, as well as to explore their dynamics and intensity. Choreography allows for critical reflection on corporeality, subjectivity, performativity, and the very conditions of art production. It is a form of sensory analysis that operates at the intersection of the intimate, the social, the political, and the aesthetic.

The exhibition Systems of Reference: Choreography in the Museum at the Museum of Art in Łódź aims to examine choreographic practices and methods of presenting performative works in collaboration with a group of Polish choreographers. The artists have been invited to temporarily use the first floor of the Museum of Art at 36 Więckowskiego Street as a space for rehearsals and research. During their stay at the Museum, during its regular opening hours, the artists will revisit themes present in their previous works, exploring the possibilities of opening up their own artistic practice to the public. In the second half of April, they will leave the exhibition space, leaving behind scores, objects, documents, and situations that visitors will be able to experience at the Museum until May 8, 2016.
